The scholarship honors the life and legacy of Officer Kennis Croom, described by organizers as a dedicated law enforcement officer whose service, sacrifice and commitment to protecting others continue to inspire the community.
As Patch previously reported in June 2022, Croom was working for the Meridian Police Department in Mississippi and responded to a domestic violence call, where he was shot and killed by a man who had also killed his pregnant wife.

He was 30 years old.
A graduate of Paul W. Bryant High School in Tuscaloosa, Croom interned at the Tuscaloosa Police Department while pursuing his education at Stillman College.
Croom is the son of former Alabama football player Kelvin Croom and the nephew of former Mississippi State University football coach Sylvester Croom, who also starred on the gridiron for the Tide.
He is also the brother of Tuscaloosa County EMA Deputy Director Tamara Croom.
According to his family's foundation, the scholarship is designed to support students who demonstrate perseverance, leadership and a desire to uplift their communities through education.
The nonprofit also said the scholarship reflects Croom’s belief in service, opportunity and investing in young people who are working to build a stronger and more compassionate world.
