The move was widely expected after O'Brien's two-year stint in Tuscaloosa, which included an SEC title and a Heisman Trophy winner in Bryce Young. The stretch was also a disappointing one for many fans, with high expectations dashed by back-to-back seasons coming up short for a national title.

The news was first reported by ESPN's Chris Low and Adam Schefter, as O'Brien returns to the Patriots after a previous stint from 2007-2011.
O'Brien edged out several candidates, including Patriots tight ends coach Nick Caley, Cardinals receivers coach Shawn Jefferson, Vikings receivers coach Keenan McCardell, and Oregon assistant Adrian Klemm.

O'Brien will also have the opportunity to coach former Alabama quarterback Mac Jones, who is viewed as the signal-caller of the future for Bill Belichick.
This now opens the offensive coordinator job on Nick Saban's staff at Alabama, which follows defensive coordinator Pete Golding leaving to join Lane Kiffin's staff at Ole Miss earlier this month.
