Body Of Missing UA Student Found At Oliver Lock & Dam

TUSCALOOSA, AL. — The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency has confirmed that the body of a University of Alabama student missing since a Tuesday night boat wreck on the Black Warrior River has been recovered.

UA provided a statement to Patch Thursday expressing condolences to the family and friends of 20-year-old Kirsten Jones.

"The University of Alabama community is saddened by the loss of student Kirsten Jones, who was involved in a boating accident on the Black Warrior River," said UA Assistant Director of Communications Shane Dorrill. " Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends as we mourn one of our UA family."

Dorrill confirmed to Patch that Jones was a junior, majoring in public health.

ALEA Public Information Officer Senior Trooper Reginal King said the agency, who is handling the investigation, plans to issue a formal statement at some point Thursday as the investigation continues, but could confirm the body was recovered Thursday morning.

Jones was reported missing after a boat carrying three people went over the dam Tuesday night around 8 p.m. Patch previously reported that all three passengers in the vessel were submerged, but only two surfaced.

UA says counseling is available to all students through the UA Counseling Center at 1001 Jackson Avenue or 205-348-3863, and to all faculty and staff through the UA Employee Assistance Program at hr.ua.edu.
