Charges Upgraded In Crash On The Strip That Injured 2 UA Students

William Brown is now facing first-degree assault and saw a DUI added to his list of charges over the weekend following the crash.

TUSCALOOSA, AL — A Holt man jailed on felonies for a Friday night crash on The Strip saw his charges upgraded due to the injuries sustained by two University of Alabama students.

William Patrick Brown, 32, was initially charged with second-degree assault after the wreck around 10:30 p.m. Friday night, which has now been elevated to first-degree after it was found that the injuries to the 19-year-old man were more serious that they first appeared, according to the Tuscaloosa Police Department Monday morning.

Both victims are still being treated for serious injuries and TPD expects to have an update on their conditions later today.

TPD also said a DUI charge against Brown was added Sunday and he could face further charges once the case is presented to a grand jury. Bond was set at $30,000 for each assault charge relating to the two victims, while he also received a $5,000 bond for the DUI charge.

Tuscaloosa Patch has obtained a video of the crash, which occurred in the area of Rounders and Quick Grill on University Boulevard. The footage shows the jeep hit the broad side of the Joyride golf cart at a high rate of speed, pinning it against a van.

TPD previously said it was determined that Brown had been speeding through the Publix parking lot before he ran the stop sign entering University Boulevard and crashed into the Joyride and the van.

The Joyride passengers, an 18-year-old woman and a 19-year-old man, were transported from the scene to DCH Regional Medical Center, while the ride-share driver also later went to the hospital via private vehicle for treatment of less serious injuries.

Investigators said the driver of the van did not appear to be injured.
