Commission Accepts Bids For Expansion At Tuscaloosa County Jail

TUSCALOOSA, AL — The Tuscaloosa County Commission on Wednesday approved the acceptance of two bids for large-scale renovations planned for the Tuscaloosa County Jail.

As Patch previously reported, plans call for the addition of a 34,000-square-foot medical/psychiatric and minimum-security dormitory for the jail, along with new inmate worker housing units.

Bids for the project were received in early August, with the Commission approving separate bids for the site work and general work.
According to JMR+H Architecture — the architect for the project — two bids were received for site work, with Compass Civil Construction of Tuscaloosa coming in as the low bidder at $1,192,531.18.

For general work on the project, K and A Builders, Inc. of Tuscaloosa was the low bidder, with a total base bid of $888,000.
The architecture firm said, based on an analysis of the bid versus the probable cost, the total probable cost for the total package was $1,491,834.
Separately, the additional scope of work added to the package approved by the Commission on Wednesday was $543,290. This brings the total probable cost of the project is $2,035,124., with both bid items coming in at $2,080,531.
The Commission approved the measure with a 3-0 vote. District 3 Commissioner Mark Nelson was not present at Wednesday morning's regular meeting.
