Cottondale Man Charged With Murder After Roommate's Body Discovered
A Cottondale man is charged with murder after Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's deputies found the body of his 61-year-old roommate.

TUSCALOOSA, AL — A Tuscaloosa County man is charged with murder after Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's deputies found the body of his 61-year-old roommate in an outbuilding at a residence on Fork Lane in Cottondale.

Tuscaloosa County Violent Crimes Unit Commander Captain Jack Kennedy said the sheriff's office was contacted at noon Saturday in regards to a welfare check for Barry Sartain, 61. The third party who contacted investigator reported that a resident of the home in the 11000 block of Fork Lane had allegedly killed a male roommate.

Deputies arrived to conduct a welfare check on the reported victim, Kennedy said, and the resident, 24-year-old Daniel Scott Raines, initially reported to police that Sartain had left several days ago and had not returned.
Raines then gave consent for deputies to search.

Kennedy then said deputies located Sartain's body in an outbuilding, before Raines was detained and the scene secured.
"Raines later admitted that he had killed Sartain during an altercation," he said.
Raines was charged with murder and booked into the Tuscaloosa County Jail without bond set until his case can be evaluated by the court.
