Cottondale Man Indicted For Sexually-Abusing Minors

A Cottondale man is behind bars and accused of sexually abusing numerous young girls, which follows a months-long investigation.

TUSCALOOSA, AL — A Cottondale man is behind bars and accused of sexually abusing numerous young girls over the last several years, which follows a months-long investigation by the Sexual Assault Section of the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit.

Captain Jack Kennedy, commander of the multi-agency unit, said the investigation began last year after reports were received that Raymond Eugene DeWoody had been grooming 11-16 year old girls by supplying them with alcohol, gifts, trips to sporting events, and holding “house parties.”

He then said most of of the crimes reported occurred over of the last several years.

"During the course of the investigation, several possible juvenile victims were identified," Kennedy said. "VCU investigators diligently followed every lead, interviewed dozens of witnesses, and presented their finding to a grand jury."

DeWoody, 64, was indicted and taken into custody Tuesday. He is charged with first degree sodomy, first degree sexual abuse, and sexual abuse of a child younger than 12 years old.

He remains in the Tuscaloosa County Jail, with his combined bond set at $50,000.

Kennedy said investigators believe there is a strong possibility that there are other victims in this case, before encourage anyone with information to contact the Violent Crimes Unit at (205) 464-8690.
