Tuscaloosa County Contributes $250K To Community Service Programs Of West Alabama

The Tuscaloosa County Commission on Wednesday approved $250,000 for two initiatives underway for the nonprofit.

TUSCALOOSA, AL — The Tuscaloosa County Commission on Wednesday approved two allocations of American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding in the total amount of $250,000 for two different initiatives underway by Community Service Programs of West Alabama.

District 3 Commissioner Mark Nelson first motioned for $175,000 in federal aid money to be given to the nonprofit for renovations to its Vineyard Building on Black Bears Way behind Central High School.

Nelson explained that the hub provides different supportive services such as energy assistance, emergency needs, disaster assistance and more.

According to its website, CSP offers resources and services in an effort to resolve immediate needs for individuals in order to program longterm self-sufficiency for low income and vulnerable populations.

The first measure on Wednesday passed with District 4 Commissioner Reginald Murray absent and District 2 Commissioner Jerry Tingle rescued, due to serving on the CSP Board of Directors.

The second motion made by Nelson saw the Commission approved $75,000 to help advance the Glen Revitalization Initiative, which is one of the CSP programs that works to renovate homes to bring them into compliance with building codes.

Nelson said the nonprofit is currently addressing approximately 15 homes, with a total fundraising goal of $450,000 to make the program possible.

The $75,000 approved by the Commission on Wednesday will go toward the balance of the program.
