Democrat State Rep. Chris England Seeks Re-Election In House District 70

State Rep. Chris England, a Democrat from Tuscaloosa, officially qualified this week to seek re-election in House District 70.

TUSCALOOSA, AL — State Rep. Chris England, a Democrat from Tuscaloosa, officially qualified this week to seek re-election in House District 70.

England, 49, is a Central High graduate who went on to serve as the first Black chairman of either major political party in Alabama.

He is an attorney by trade and has served in the legislature since 2006, where he chaired the Alabama Democratic Party from 2019 until 2022.

"I sincerely appreciate all of the love and support that you have given me over the years," England said in his official announcement. "I hope that I have earned your continued support and that you will allow me the opportunity to work for you in this capacity for another four years."

After earning his undergraduate degree from Howard University, he went on to graduate from the University of Alabama Law School in 2002.

He is also the son of Alabama legal legend Judge John H. England Jr., a longtime Tuscaloosa County Circuit Court judge who also served as a justice on the Supreme Court of Alabama.

Apart from his legislative duties, England currently works as associate city attorney for the City of Tuscaloosa, where he handles claims, franchise agreements and tax issues.

"I am going to work on making sure we see the Highway 69 South project and West Alabama corridor to its completion," he told Patch. "Continuing to support local education through grants and also through finding long term sustainable funding sources, continuing to be an advocate for West Alabama, and also be a voice in Montgomery for those that can’t afford to pay for a lobbyist."

England and his wife, Shea, have three children.

The 2026 primary election is set for Tuesday, May 19, followed by the general Election on Nov. 3.
