"It was a total surprise and a real honor," Yancey told Patch. "I feel deeply honored. The Exchange Club is a wonderful group of men and women. They’re dedicated to serving their community and we’re really good friends. I was in tears. I couldn’t believe it."
Since 2022, Yancey has served on the board of the Tuscaloosa County Parks and Recreation Authority (PARA) Foundation, where she works with donors, advocates and community stakeholders to support county parks, recreational facilities and programs.
A graduate of the Leadership Tuscaloosa Class of 2022, the career prosecutor is also a member of the University of Alabama Opera Guild since 2021, supporting student performers in the university's opera program while helping expand the organization's community outreach efforts.
Yancey's years of community service also extend far beyond her time in West Alabama.
Prior to her time in Tuscaloosa, Yancey previously served as a board member and past president of Leadership San Ramon Valley in California and was appointed to the San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District Board of Directors before later winning election to the position.
During her career, she also served on the San Ramon Parks and Community Services Commission and held leadership positions with several civic and charitable organizations, including the One Hundred Club of Contra Costa County.
"My daughter graduated from the University of Alabama in 2017," Yancey explained. "When she started as a freshman in 2013, we really fell in love with Tuscaloosa. We got involved in a lot of things and at the end of 2020 we moved here."
Yancey went on to say she and her husband, Dan, decided to retire in Tuscaloosa.
"I’ve always believed there’s a difference between living in your community and being a part of your community," she said. "My husband and I have always believed we should be a part of our community. It’s been wonderful, and everyone has embraced us. We love Tuscaloosa, and we love the state of Alabama."
Yancey also encouraged those interested to come on Thursdays to Exchange Club meetings, which are held at noon each week at Hotel Capstone.
