“No sentence can undo the harm that was done, but today’s outcome ensures this offender will never have the opportunity to hurt another child,” Hamlin said in a statement. “I’m proud of the work done by our team and our law enforcement partners, and I hope this brings some measure of justice to the victim.”

Court records show the charge stemmed from the rape of a minor victim.

Prior to sentencing on Thursday, Elam’s defense attorneys filed a sentencing memorandum outlining significant health concerns and requesting a lesser sentence.

Court records show this filing was also accompanied by numerous character witness letters on Elam's behalf from his family members and others close to him.

The filing detailed a range of serious medical conditions, including chronic kidney disease, coronary artery disease, diabetes and pulmonary issues, arguing that extended incarceration would pose substantial health risks for Elam.

The memorandum also noted Elam had no prior felony convictions and asked the court to consider a sentence within the lower statutory range, potentially allowing for probation under Alabama law.

The court ultimately rejected that request and imposed the maximum penalty.
