At Skyland Elementary, TCS says the the Power of Four initiative organizes students into four character-based houses — Determination, Accountability, Respect and Optimism — to strengthen school culture. School system leaders said the approach has helped improve behavior, engagement and the school’s state report card score.

“The Power of Four has created a culture where every student feels seen, valued and connected,” Principal Keonta Melton said.

Tuscaloosa Magnet Schools–Elementary was recognized for its Beyond the Classroom initiative, which connects students with local organizations and businesses through projects spanning academics, arts, wellness and enrichment.

“This recognition celebrates how we’ve made education relational and visible through our sustained partnerships with the Tuscaloosa community,” Principal Preeti Nichani said.

Westlawn Middle School administrators credited a character-education framework built around integrity, kindness, perseverance, structure and success with improving school climate, engagement and academics.

“Being named a CLAS School of Distinction is more than an honor for Westlawn Middle School — it is a powerful affirmation of our commitment to academic excellence and a culture rooted in strong character,” Principal Darlene Atkins said.

STARS Academy earned recognition for Blooming in SEL, a social-emotional learning program combining mentorship and hands-on gardening experiences to build confidence and resilience.

“When students are given structure, support and high expectations, they thrive and truly bloom where they are planted,” Principal Donmonique Morgan said.

The four schools will be recognized at a CLAS awards luncheon in April.
