Holt High, Bryant Listed As Failing Schools In 2022 State Rankings

Four schools in Tuscaloosa County, including two high schools, were listed among 79 failing schools in Alabama

TUSCALOOSA, AL — Four schools in Tuscaloosa County, including two high schools, were listed among 79 failing schools in Alabama, according to the latest ranks provided by the Alabama Department of Education.

Tuscaloosa City Schools saw Paul W. Bryant High School return to the failing schools list, along with Central Elementary and Westlawn Middle School. For the Tuscaloosa County School System, Holt High School was also listed among the the lowest 6% of schools identified.

Patch has reached out to both school systems for comment.

It's worth noting that each of the schools from the Tuscaloosa area on the list report predominately minority enrollment, with noticeably high percentages of economically disadvantaged students.

In total, 79 Alabama schools were considered "failing" as the state reported its list in compliance with the Alabama Accountability Act of 2015.

Paul W. Bryant High

  • Total enrollment: 1,020
  • Minority enrollment: 94%
  • Graduation rate: 88%
  • Economically disadvantaged students: 48%

Holt High School

  • Total enrollment: 403
  • Minority enrollment: 73.9%
  • Graduation rate: 82%
  • Economically disadvantaged students: 84%

Central Elementary

  • Total enrollment: 316
  • Minority enrollment: 99.1%
  • Reading proficiency: 17% compared to 43% statewide
  • Math proficiency: 27% compared to 45% statewide
  • Economically disadvantaged students: 87%

Westlawn Middle School

  • Total enrollment: 545
  • Minority enrollment: 98.3%
  • Reading proficiency: 20% compared to 43% statewide
  • Math proficiency: 11% compared to 45% statewide
  • Economically disadvantaged students: 92%
