Investigators Identify Man Killed In Possible Hit-And-Run In Northport

The Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit provided an update Thursday after a body was found on the side of Highway 43 North in Northport.

NORTHPORT, AL — The Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit provided updates Thursday after a body was found on the side of Highway 43 North in Northport.

As Patch previously reported, the body of a man was discovered when Northport Police officers responded around 6:41 p.m. Wednesday after receiving a report of debris on the side of the road.

Captain Jack Kennedy, commander of the multiagency unit, said Thursday the body was found near the intersection 93rd Street after a caller reported that they believed they had seen a body near the side of the road.

"Officers arrived on scene and located a deceased male," Kennedy said. "It appeared that the male had been struck by a vehicle, which then left the scene. It is believed to have occurred between 6:20 p.m. and 6:40 p.m.

The victim was identified as Willie Clay Fleming, 72, of Northport.

He then said Northport Police Traffic Homicide and Violent Crimes Unit are handling the investigation.

"There is heavy traffic in this area of Highway 43 43 at this time of day," Kennedy said. "We ask that any witnesses to this incident to please contact law enforcement and request any drivers in the area around that time who have dash cams, to check and see if they captured any video of the incident.
