Ivey Appoints Northport Native To Alabama Board Of Nursing

Northport native Kristi Acker has been appointed by Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey to serve on the Alabama Board of Nursing.

TUSCALOOSA, AL — Northport native and Family Nurse Practitioner Kristi Acker has been appointed by Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey to serve on the Alabama Board of Nursing.

Acker's appointment will be effective Jan. 1, 2023 as she serves in the position previously held by Natalie Baker. The term will last until Dec. 31, 2026.

The Alabama Board of Nursing is tasked with handling licensing and approval of qualified individuals, in addition to adopting and enforcing legal standards for nursing education and nursing practice in Alabama.

Acker, who currently works full-time as a clinical assistant professor at the Capstone College of Nursing at the University of Alabama, has worked in community oncology since 1993 and maintains her clinical practice with Oncology Associates of West Alabama.

Acker's clinical practice provides outpatient oncology services at DCH Health System's Manderson Cancer Center in Fayette.

Along with her most recent appointment, Acker also chairs the State Advisory Council on Palliative Care and Quality of Life, in addition to being a member of a community workgroup through the Alabama Hospital Association that aims to promote a statewide initiative for advanced care planning.

A graduate of Northside High School in Tuscaloosa County, Acker went on to receive her bachelor of science in nursing from the University of Alabama, before earning a master's degree in nursing from Mississippi University for Women and her Doctor of Nursing Practice from UAB.

Most recently, Acker completed her PhD in nursing at William Carey University in 2019.

Married to Tuscaloosa County Commissioner Stan Acker, she is the mother of two adult daughters — Abby Francis and Olivia.

The couple also recently welcomed the addition of their first grandchild, Levi.
