Live Updates: Tuscaloosa District 7 Special Election Results

TUSCALOOSA, AL — The overall number of ballots is in for the Tuscaloosa City Council District 7 special election and Cassius Lanier has won by a wide margin.

Tuesday's ballot featured a rematch of the March 2 municipal election for the council district, which saw Lanier defeat incumbent Sonya McKinstry by the narrowest of margins, before a challenge to the results saw a judge overturn the victory. This would pave the way for the two candidates to face off again Tuesday.

District 7, which covers a large portion of southeast Tuscaloosa, has 8,847 registered voters, according to City of Tuscaloosa election data. Despite a mayoral election on the March 2 ballot, turnout was low for District 7, with only 1,473 or 16% of registered voters casting ballots. Lanier would go on to win by 28 votes before the results were thrown out.
