Man Dies After Officer-Involved Shooting With Tuscaloosa Police

The suspect was transported for the scene Thursday night and pronounced dead at DCH Regional Medical Center.

TUSCALOOSA, AL — A man is dead after being shot by a Tuscaloosa Police officers Thursday night on Skyland Boulevard as TPD responded to a domestic violence call.

Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit Commander Jack Kennedy said the shooting occurred at approximately 9:15 p.m. in the area of 230 Skyland Boulevard after it was reported that a man was armed with a handgun and had fired a round into a vehicle occupied by his children’s mother, as well as their two small children.

Kennedy then said as officers were speaking with the victim, the suspect was observed driving in the area. The man pulled over as officers attempted a traffic stop, but then fled in his vehicle and drove a short distance.

"The suspect stopped and fled from his vehicle and officers pursued the suspect on foot," Kennedy said. "The suspect was located in a wooded area, and produced and fired a handgun as officers were approaching and giving commands. After the suspect fired his weapon, the officers returned fire."

The man killed, who has yet to be identified, was struck during the shooting and transported to DCH Regional Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead. A heavy multi-agency police presence could be seen in the vicinity of Enterprise rent-a-car and Los Tarascos late into the evening hours Thursday.

Patch also reported Thursday night that no police officers were injured in the shooting.

At the scene, the area between the two businesses was cordoned off, while a Dodge Ram pickup truck could be seen with the driver's side door left open and surrounded by TPD patrol vehicles.

The Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit then assumed the investigation and as per protocol, no investigators affiliated with the Tuscaloosa Police Department will be involved in the case.
