According to trial evidence extensively reported on by Patch, in the early morning hours of July 28, 2021, an Alabama state trooper on routine patrol discovered the body of Syibnieka Underwood sitting in the passenger seat of a vehicle parked on the shoulder of Highway 82 in Hale County.

Authorities determined the victim had been shot at close range in the head.

Investigators soon received an anonymous tip alleging Herron-Antone was responsible for Underwood’s death and that she had been killed at his residence.

When officers went to his home, they observed a smoldering burn pile in the yard and later recovered an earring belonging to the victim. Investigators also found the victim’s DNA in Herron-Antone’s yard, prosecutors said.

Patch previously reported that Herron-Antone’s initial trial ended prematurely due to juror misconduct. However, he was convicted during a second trial in Tuscaloosa County.

The case was prosecuted by the office of Tuscaloosa County District Attorney Hays Webb, which secured the guilty verdicts.

Herron-Antone is currently serving his life sentence at the William E. Donaldson Correctional Facility in Bessemer.
