Northport Approves $44.2M General Fund Operating Budget For FY24

Here are the highlights from the fiscal year 2024 general fund operating budget approved by the Northport City Council on Monday.

NORTHPORT, AL — The Northport City Council on Monday unanimously approved a $44.28 million general fund operating budget for fiscal year 2024, in addition to an $11.52 million water and sewer fund operating budget.

In terms of revenues, the upcoming fiscal year represents a sizable increase from the $41.33 million general fund operating budget approved for the current fiscal year.

The city anticipates collecting $22.25 million from the city's sales tax in the coming year, which includes a 1-cent earmark dubbed "Northport First" funds that is set aside for education, recreation, and infrastructure.

Here are some other general fund revenue highlights from the budget passed Monday evening:

  • $6.4 million from business licenses
  • $5.4 million from county sales taxes.
  • $4.15 million from property taxes
  • $1.9 million from garbage collection fees.

As for general fund expenses, the Northport Police Department will have an $8.84 million allocation from the city, while Northport Fire Rescue was budgeted for $8.35 million.

Apart from department funding, the City Council also approved different economic incentives for certain projects, including $150,000 for the Mercedes Benz Project Crimson; $187,500 for Northport Corners, LLC; $40,000 for the North Square Property adjacent to City Hall; and $50,000 for Mansa Hospitality — the proprietor of the new Courtyard by Marriott in Northport.

Other highlights:

  • $7.36 million for the Public Works Department.
  • $2.99 million for the Administrative Department.
  • $1.44 million for the City Engineer's office.
  • $1.21 million for Northport Municipal Court.
  • $175,000 set aside for resurfacing projects around the city.
  • $8,000 each for discretionary spending for mayor and council members.
  • $18,000 for travel for the mayor and council.
  • $11.52 million is expected to be collected for the separate water and sewer operating budget, with the largest shares coming from water sales ($6.2 million) and wastewater sales ($4.82 million)
