Northport Mayor Bobby Herndon is the petitioner for the street renaming that would see 28th Street become Benevolent Way. The mayor's surveying office — Herndon, Hicks & Associates — is located on 28th Street, which is regularly used as donation space to collect items during times of crisis.

Most recently, Herndon collected donations for flooding victims in eastern Kentucky, with his office once again serving as the drop-off location.
The Public Safety Committee will be tasked with assessing the possible impacts of a name change, particularly those affecting emergencies services and first responders when responding to calls.

Located between 20th Avenue and Lurleen B. Wallace Boulevard, Northport Fire Chief Bart Marshall pointed out in an email to city officials that the proposed name change would result in minimal effects on response from Northport Fire Rescue, due to it only covering one block of city street.
The Northport Police Department also agreed with Marshall's assessment, saying there would not be any major effects posed to police operations.
Two public meetings will then be held two weeks apart to give time for all property owners to be notified and have a chance to speak for or against the measure.
The Northport City Council's Public Safety Committee will meet Monday, Aug. 15 at 2:45 p.m. in Northport City Hall.
