Born in Wetumpka, Donna Aaron graduated from Wetumpka High School and went on to graduate from the University of Alabama with a bachelor's degree in mathematics. After a career as an educator, she went on to serve two terms on the city council, before being elected mayor in October 2016.
Sonny Aaron, a graduate of Tuscaloosa County High School, was also a professional educator and beloved coach, working in the Northside community and Northport Junior High School.

"I don't have a whole lot to say, except how happy this wonderful woman was six years ago when she became mayor of Northport by the good people," Sonny Aaron said when accepting the award. "Well I'm sure she's standing in heaven today just as happy because she got that award."
