Northport Council To Once Again Consider Controversial Townhome Development

The Northport City Council will once again vote on a contentious townhome development amid outcry for nearby residents.

NORTHPORT, AL — The Northport City Council will once again consider granting a conditional use request and approving the master development plan for the developer of a controversial proposed townhome development on Hunter Creek Road.

However, the matter made its way back before the Commission on Aug. 9 and received a favorable recommendation, despite outcry from residents of Brookside and Vestavia. It will now receive a first reading before the Council on Thursday, before being voted on at the next meeting or tabled until a later date.

Nibroc Development and Corbin Custom Homes have crafted the proposed master plan that was previously voted down, which first called for 27 individual townhome units and a total of 60 bedrooms on the property.

It was also mentioned that the units would be intended for sale and not rent, which is a notion that has remained consistent through the series of debates over the last year.

However, the latest incarnation of the project — according to filing made by the developer — would consist of 22 units made up of 18 two-bedroom units and four three-bedroom units.

In addition to the residential offerings, the development would also include a gazebo/pavilion area, a walking trail and approximately 2.5 acres of open green space.

Nearby residents have been vocal in their opposition of the development, citing increased traffic, pollution and water runoff as the reasons for previously taking up a petition against the project.

The Northport City Council will have its next regular meeting on Thursday, Sept. 8 at noon.
