Typically celebrated on June 19 as a way to commemorate the formal ending of slavery in the United States, Juneteenth finally became a federal holiday in 2021.

If approved during Monday night's regular City Council meeting, Northport will join the City of Tuscaloosa in acknowledging the holiday, as Tuscaloosa has already set aside June 20 for its observances.
Tuscaloosa County, as of the publication of this story, has not formally adopted a resolution acknowledging the federal holiday.

The next regular meeting of the Northport City Council is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on Monday, June 6.
