NORTHPORT, AL — The City of Northport has been awarded a $98,147.50 grant from the Alabama Department of Environmental Management’s (ADEM) Recycling Fund, which will help finance the city's curbside recycling program.

The city applied to ADEM for the funding, which will cover the costs of two recycling trailers that will be placed at drop off locations, in addition to a Ford F350 truck to haul the recycling trailers.

The city also announced plans to purchase promotional items for the program.

“The City of Northport’s recycling program will continue to strive to improve the quality of life for our citizens," said Director of Public Works Brooke Starnes. "We want to increase awareness of our recycling services, while fostering a healthier environment and taking great pride in our City. Our goal is to create a litter free environment and reduce waste through recycling efforts."

The money will be of much use to the city, despite it being lower than the $150,000 it received from ADEM for the program in 2020. It used those funds to purchase a curb sorter and promote the program, which had reached 22% in April, before a push by the City Council to boost participation — an initiative that did indeed see a short-term surge in residents signing up for the burgeoning service.

The City of Northport's Public Works Department manages the curbside service, which is available to new and existing residential garbage customers.

Recycling bin delivery can be requested by contacting the Public Works office at (205) 333-3003, 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Click here to learn more.

A grant presentation will be held at Northport City Hall Monday, Aug. 16 at 1 p.m.
