Northport Police Department Lands $20K Federal Grant For Body Camera Program

NORTHPORT, AL — The Northport Police Department on Thursday announced it has been awarded a $20,000 federal grant to expand and enhance its body-worn camera program.

The funding was provided through the U.S. Department of Justice Bureau of Justice Assistance Policy and Implementation Program, which allowed the department to add 10 new body cameras to ensure every patrol officer is now equipped with the technology.

As part of the grant requirements, the Northport Police Department also updated its comprehensive body-worn camera policy and successfully completed the national program’s policy review process.
NPD said the expanded program will support a wide range of law enforcement functions, including officer training, safety and evidence collection for prosecutors and other criminal justice partners.

Officials also emphasized the role body cameras play in strengthening relationships with the community.
“Body-worn cameras are a vital tool for law enforcement agencies to increase accountability and build trust with the communities they serve,” BJA Director Karhlton F. Moore said.
Northport Police Chief Gearld Burton said the grant will have a direct impact on public confidence in the department.
“This award has made it possible for our agency to provide a higher level of transparency, accountability and safety to the citizens of Northport,” he said.
