TCS Celebrates Northridge Boys Tennis Coach For Earning AHSAA Coach Of The Year

TUSCALOOSA, AL — The Tuscaloosa City Board of Education on Tuesday recognized Northridge High School boys tennis coach John Cain for earning Boys Tennis Coach of the Year from the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA).

A total of 19 coaches in the state of Alabama were recognized in July by the AHSAA as Coaches of the Year of their particular sport. The Northridge boys tennis team finished 12-1 during the 2021-22 season, ultimately placing fourth in the state and winning the AHSAA Class 6A, Section 4 championship.

TCS Athletic Director Maurice Heard said the coaches must exemplify high standards of sportsmanship, ethical conduct and moral character, in addition to being endorsed by their state high school associations.

Cain was also presented the Achieving Excellence challenge coin by Tuscaloosa City Schools Superintendent Mike Daria — an award given by TCS in recognition of high excellence

"This award is about the character of this man and all the things he did for our district," Heard said.

What's more, Cain also earned high praise from TCS Board of Education Chair Eric Wilson, whose son played on the 2021-22 team under Cain

"When I was writing down some of my thoughts, I used the words ethical, high character when I described him," Wilson said. "No one is more deserving of this award than you. You change children's lives, for the better, every day. "
