TUSCALOOSA, AL — Shelton State Community College on Wednesday announced it has reopened a scholarship for students pursuing careers in nontraditional fields.

The Perkins Scholarship will be accepting applications through July 7, providing scholarships for students enrolled in a gender-nontraditional program of study.

As Patch previously reported, “gender nontraditional” refers to occupations or work areas, including careers in computer science, technology, and other emerging high-skill occupations in which individuals from one gender comprise less than 25% of the individuals employed in that occupation or field.

Shelton State also explains that female nontraditional careers are occupations in which less than 25% of individuals employed are female, while male nontraditional careers are occupations where less than 25% of employed individuals are male.

The college says many current and former SSCC students have found enrolling in a nontraditional gender program to be a rewarding and life-changing experience.
