The officer then returned fire, striking Williams.
Williams was taken to Hale County Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The officer was also injured and transported to a local hospital for treatment.
At the request of the Hale County Sheriff’s Office, ALEA special agents assigned to the SBI are leading the investigation.
ALEA Secretary Hal Taylor said in a statement that the agency is praying for the officer’s recovery and supporting the officer’s family and fellow law enforcement officers.
“What began as a traffic stop, which is never routine, quickly turned into a life-threatening situation, underscoring the dangers officers face every day,” Taylor said.
ALEA said no additional information was immediately available because the investigation remains ongoing.
Once complete, the agency’s findings will be turned over to the Hale County District Attorney’s Office.
