"Several hours after arriving at the hospital, the inmate’s health began declining, and despite emergency medical treatment, he died a short time later," Kennedy said. "Since this inmate was in custody at the time, the death will be investigated by the Violent Crimes Unit."

Kennedy then said the investigation will be conducted by officers and supervisors not affiliated with the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office, which is the agency that manages and oversees the Tuscaloosa County Jail.
