UPDATE: Body Of Missing Boater Recovered From River In Sumter County

SUMTER COUNTY, AL — The search for a missing boater in Sumter County came to a tragic end Monday morning when authorities recovered the body of a Washington County man from the Tombigbee River.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) said Damond E. Driggers, 48, of Millry, was recovered from the river at approximately 8:10 a.m. Monday near Gainesville, close to the same location where he initially fell overboard early Sunday morning.

Patch previously reported that Driggers was operating a 17-foot Aluminum Excel duck boat when he went overboard around midnight Sunday and never resurfaced.

ALEA said Driggers was not wearing a personal flotation device and was not using an emergency cutoff switch at the time of the incident.

Troopers with ALEA's Marine Patrol Division and officers with the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources responded and launched a search effort Sunday.

The agency said nothing further is available as Marine Patrol Troopers continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
