Visitor Spending Topped $1B In Tuscaloosa County Last Year

TUSCALOOSA, AL — Tourism generated more than $1 billion in visitor spending across Tuscaloosa County in 2025, according to data released Tuesday by Visit Tuscaloosa.

Visit Tuscaloosa reported that visitors accounted for 20% of all spending in Tuscaloosa County during the year, with more than 750,000 overnight visitors generating 1.1 million paid accommodation room nights.

Overall paid accommodation revenue totaled $136.2 million through hotels and short-term rental properties.
Visit Tuscaloosa President and CEO Kelsey Rush said tourism is a key driver of the economic vitality and cultural vibrancy of the community.

"Every visitor who stays in our hotels, dines in our restaurants, attends events, shops locally or experiences our attractions directly supports jobs, local businesses and the quality of life our residents enjoy every day," she said.
According to the Visit Tuscaloosa report, food and beverage purchases accounted for 52% of visitor spending, followed by gas and service stations at 24%, retail purchases at 16% and accommodations at 9%.
Sports tourism remained one of the area's strongest economic drivers in 2025, with Visit Tuscaloosa saying it directly recruited, supported or assisted with more than 160 events throughout the year, generating an estimated $24 million in economic impact and more than $1.6 million in tax revenue.
Tourism officials said those efforts produced more than 23,000 room nights through sporting events, site visits and familiarization tours.
Among the organization's major tourism and sports-related achievements in 2025 were hosting games and championship events for the Athletes Unlimited Softball League at Rhoads Stadium, securing the HBCU Athletic Conference Baseball and Softball Championships for 2026 through 2028, landing the NJCAA Division II Women's Golf Championships for the same period and recruiting the 2027 Southern Travelers Explore Conference.
Visit Tuscaloosa also highlighted continued growth at River Run Park in Northport, which officials described as an emerging anchor for regional sports tourism.
The organization expanded several destination development initiatives during the year, including the launch of the Tuscaloosa Civil Rights Digital Pass, new historic downtown walking tours, expanded outdoor recreation opportunities along the Riverwalk and continued growth of events such as Tuscaloosa Restaurant Week and Tuscaloosa Oktoberfest.
Visit Tuscaloosa also unveiled its new TuscaLife branding campaign and launched a redesigned website aimed at increasing destination awareness and encouraging overnight visitation.
"Our momentum extends far beyond this incredible year of data," Rush said. "From sports tourism and culinary experiences to cultural storytelling and outdoor recreation, Tuscaloosa is continuing to evolve as one of the South's most dynamic college town destinations."
