More Than 200 Students Honored For World Language Proficiency
Vestavia Hills High School this week recognized more than 200 students for excellence in the study of world languages.
VESTAVIA HILLS, AL — The need to be fluent in multiple languages has become increasingly vital, and Vestavia Hills High School this week honored students who have shown a proficiency for world languages.
The school held an induction ceremony Tuesday to formally welcome 163 students into its five world language honor societies: Spanish, French, German, Latin and American Sign Language.
This was the first year students were inducted into the school’s new American Sign Language honor society. Nine students earned the right to join the honor society for their proficiency in sign language.

The ceremony also featured the awarding of the Seal of Biliteracy medal to 75 students. The Seal of Biliteracy is given to seniors who have demonstrated proficiency in two or more languages through national proficiency examinations, according to VHHS Spanish teacher Amanda Jordan. Vestavia Hills High School was the first school in Alabama to award the Seal of Biliteracy
