📰 News we're reading
1. Vestavia officials aim to fix interstate lighting woes (vestaviavoice.com) — Driving I-65 or I-459 near Vestavia Hills at night likely means navigating long stretches of darkness, and city officials are working with Alabama Power and neighboring cities to untangle who maintains which lights. They've inventoried poles, identified that Vestavia directly owns only a few, and are pushing a coordinated fix to improve safety and the city's image along these busy corridors.
2. 'Man, I love this band': Vestavia Hills band directors turn program into a community (al.com) — If you've seen the Vestavia Hills Rebel Band on Friday nights, this story pulls back the curtain on how directors Jerell Horton and Heather Palmer built it into a 250-student community. After 21 years in Vestavia Hills, they focus on belonging, leadership, and life skills, with alumni returning as staff and parents as the program's influence ripples through town.
3. Where to Shop in Birmingham This Fall (abouttown.io) — Vestavia Hills shoppers are included in this fall guide thanks to the Junior League's Shop Save & Share event, which offers discounts at participating retailers across Vestavia Hills, Homewood, Mountain Brook, Cahaba Heights, Crestline and The Summit from October 14–25. The piece also highlights refreshed boutiques, new stores, and easy-to-browse shopping districts around greater Birmingham for clothes, gifts, and home updates.
4. Multiple changes to No. 1 teams in AL.com Alabama high school volleyball rankings (al.com) — Vestavia Hills High School's volleyball team is currently ranked No. 5 in Alabama's Class 6A, according to the latest AL.com statewide poll. With area tournaments starting October 12, this ranking sets expectations as the Rebels head into the final regular-season week and push for postseason seeding against top competition statewide.
