1. Five things from Monday's city council meeting (knom.org) — Nome's city council narrowly approved a major lease with NSEDC that will help fund the Snake River moorage project, while also greenlighting new loader and dump truck purchases for Public Works. Council members debated how to regulate taxis and shuttles after the town's last cab company closed, and heard concerns about animal vaccination records and a resident's lifesaving help during a police altercation. 
2. Five seabirds collected near Nome test positive for bird flu (knom.org) — Wildlife tests have confirmed five seabirds collected near Nome carried the H5N1 bird flu strain, and the virus has also appeared in a fox hit in town. Officials say overall human risk remains low but urge residents to avoid handling sick or dead birds, follow game-cleaning precautions, and report distressed wildlife to local hotlines for monitoring.
3. Volleyball: Nanook JV, varsity defeat Kotzebue Huskies (nomenugget.com) — Nome volleyball fans just saw both the Nome-Beltz JV and varsity Nanooks dominate Kotzebue at a packed home gym, winning all four weekend matches. With that momentum, the team now heads to Anchorage's West Spiketacular before returning for home games against West Valley on October 9–10, where locals are urged to show up loud and proud.
4. Ocean surface temperatures (nomenugget.net) — Ocean temperatures just offshore of Nome have run slightly above normal for much of the summer, with a brief late-May warm spike from Yukon River water and more recent cooler, stormy periods. A climate specialist explains how September's changing air temperatures will soon start cooling the ocean more consistently as Nome heads toward fall.
5. Teen Survives Multiple Days Adrift in the Bering Sea (themeateater.com) — A harrowing Bering Sea rescue ended in Nome after a 15-year-old from Savoonga was found alive atop a capsized skiff and two relatives were recovered deceased. The Coast Guard and a nearby fishing vessel teamed up in rough conditions, and the survivor and bodies were ultimately transported to Nome as the village and region mourn their loss.
