101 Layoffs Coming As FedEx Closes Phoenix Warehouse

FedEx plans to begin layoffs this week at a Phoenix warehouse as part of a company shift in shipment processes.

PHOENIX, AZ — FedEx is closing a Phoenix warehouse and laying off as many as 101 workers, according to a notice filed with the state of Arizona.

The filing was made under the federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, which requires companies with 100 or more employees to give workers 60 days notice before a layoff affecting 50 or more people at a single site.

The notice says the layoffs are set to begin this week and are part of a company-wide effort to streamline shipment processes. The cuts are contained to the facility at 4475 N. 43rd Ave.

The FedEx cuts are part of a broader wave of layoffs hitting the Phoenix area this spring. Nearly 500 employees in the city are losing their jobs according to the most recent WARN filings.

Arizona saw a slight easing of layoff notices in May after an April surge, with four employers announcing a combined 877 job losses.

The largest of those, accounting for nearly 500 jobs, was tied to a college switching contractors, though officials said that change would likely not result in immediate job losses.

Other recent filings include SDH Education West, doing business as Sodexo, which provides catering and facilities management services and had a partnership with Grand Canyon University in Arizona.

The Tendit Group listed 143 workers with layoffs effective April 14, and Republic National Distributing Company listed 211 workers with layoffs effective April 23.

The filings come as Arizona's broader labor market shows signs of stabilizing. The state's unemployment rate held at 4.7% in April, 0.4% above the national average, while nonfarm employment rose by 16,300 jobs from March, according to the Arizona Office of Economic Opportunity.

"Despite price-hiking and job-killing policies from Washington, D.C., Arizona's economy continues to grow," said Governor Katie Hobbs. "Now third in the nation for job growth, Arizona is showing that our dynamic economy is resilient and gaining momentum. I'm going to continue doing everything in my power to ensure we continue growing and attracting businesses, creating jobs and lowering costs so every family has the opportunity they need to thrive."
