PHOENIX, AZ — Two officers were injured in an ambush-style shooting while attempting to make a traffic stop early Sunday in north Phoenix, according to police.

One officer was shot in the wrist, while the other suffered minor injuries from broken glass, authorities said. Both officers were taken to a hospital and are being treated for their injuries.

"This is the seventh Phoenix officer shot and 12th injured in the line of duty in the past three months," Phoenix Police Chief Jeri Williams said. "This kind of violence within our community and toward police officers cannot become the new normal."

Officers attempted to pull over a car but lost sight of it after it drove away. A short time later, the officers spotted the car and attempted to pull it over again. While the patrol car was driving on Maryland Avenue near 27th Street, a person standing along the road shot a "barrage of bullets" at the patrol car, striking the passenger, according to police.

The driver of the car being pulled over tried to flee on foot, but additional officers responding to the incident apprehended him. He is currently being interviewed, police said.
