Today's riddle: What is clean when it is black and dirty when it is white? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. Phoenix traffic camera outage tied to citywide network upgrade (azfamily.com) — Many of Phoenix's intersection traffic cameras are temporarily offline while the city overhauls its network and renovates its Traffic Management Center, though officials stress signals and safety systems still work. Crews are installing new equipment at roughly 1,300 intersections, limiting real-time video monitoring and remote timing updates until the upgraded system comes online late next year.
2. Phoenix police launch AI pilot program using body-worn camera audio to write first-draft police reports (abc15.com) — Phoenix police are testing a 90-day AI tool that drafts reports from body-camera audio, aiming to free officers for patrol and improve response times amid staffing shortages. The pilot, running through December in select units, still requires officers to edit drafts, correct a built-in error, and attest to accuracy. Results will guide whether the technology expands department-wide.
3. Phoenix fire releases final 2026 summer heat data showing record calls and an earlier start to heat season (abc15.com) — Phoenix firefighters handled a record 1,744 heat-related calls this summer, with more patients critically ill and extreme heat arriving earlier and lasting longer. Crews are increasingly stretched by mountain rescues, while new cold-water immersion tactics are helping save lives. City leaders are urging residents to take heat warnings and trail closures seriously to avoid preventable emergencies.
4. Alleged Phoenix hoarder house: How trash, debris and rats fueled cycle of violations for historic home (fox10phoenix.com) — Neighbors in Phoenix's Frances Quarles Story Historic District are battling a long-running hoarding and rat infestation at a Willetta Street home, as city and county officials pursue yet another court-ordered cleanup. The property has cycled through violations and abatements since 2009, with residents worried about health risks, vermin surges after cleanups, and whether the November court hearing will finally bring a lasting solution.
5. Adela De Aiello Dies in Mobility Scooter Crash Near 19th and Northern Avenues in Phoenix (pacificattorneygroup.com) — A 78-year-old woman riding a mobility scooter was fatally struck by a vehicle while crossing 19th Avenue near Northern in Phoenix on Monday afternoon. Investigators say she was in a crosswalk but against the signal when the driver, who stayed at the scene and showed no signs of impairment, failed to see her. Police continue to review the circumstances of the crash.
