Planning a Multi-Slide Door for Phoenix’s Open-Door Season

October is when Phoenix evenings finally make it worth opening up the back of the house. A multi-slide door is a glass wall of three or more panels that run on separate tracks. A standard slider opens about half the opening, a four-panel multi-slide opens about three quarters, and a pocketing unit opens nearly all of it.
Stacking or pocketing. Stacking panels park beside the opening. Pocketing panels slide into a cavity inside the wall, which needs enough wall depth and may mean moving wiring or plumbing.
Same opening or a wider one. The City of Phoenix lists replacement in kind of doors in its Work Exempt from Permit document, so a like-for-like swap generally does not need a permit. Widening the opening usually means a structural detail, a permit, a new header and an inspection, and the back wall of many Phoenix homes is load-bearing.
Screens and sills. Choose a retractable screen or a screen panel on its own track before ordering. A flush sill gives a level floor-to-patio transition but needs a drainage plan for monsoon rain.
If the opening is under eight feet wide, a good two-panel patio door usually makes more sense.
Noble Windows & Doors installs multi-slide doors across the Phoenix Valley. When an opening needs to be widened, the structural work is included in the quote under Noble's AZ ROC #364772 license, inside one contract.
