Heat-related illness becomes much more likely during stretches like this. Overexposure can lead to heat cramps and heat exhaustion, and without intervention, those conditions can progress to heat stroke, which is life-threatening.

A few precautions can make a real difference. Reschedule strenuous outdoor activities for early morning or evening when possible, wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing, and drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you do not feel thirsty. It also helps to know the warning signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke before symptoms appear.

For anyone working outside, federal workplace safety guidelines recommend frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned spaces to lower the risk of heat-related illness on the job.

If someone shows signs of being overcome by the heat, move them to a cool, shaded location immediately. Heat stroke is a medical emergency, and 911 should be called right away if it is suspected.
