Mesa HS Students Evacuated After Report Of Suspicious Device

MESA, AZ — Thousands of Mesa High School students were evacuated to Mountain View High School Wednesday after a report of a suspicious device, police said.

Mesa Police spokesperson Richard Encinas told local media investigators had not found anything suspicious as of 11 a.m. Wednesday. He said police got a 911 call Wednesday morning about a suspicious device.

"We are still actively going through all the buildings and making sure everything is safe," he said.

Police announced just before 10 a.m. Wednesday that the high school was on lockdown. More than 3,000 students were evacuated to the football field and then transported to Mountain View by bus. The evacuation was finished shortly after 11:30 a.m. Parents should contact Mesa High School for information about where and when to pick up their students.

Encinas said between three and six students were treated for heat-related illnesses.

Police have shut down the intersection of Harris Drive and Southern Avenue.

Police are asking people to avoid the area, and use Gilbert Road or Stapely Drive to get around.

Encinas thanked the Phoenix Police Department, Maricopa County Sheriff's Office, Tempe Police Department, and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) for their assistance.
