Phoenix Animal Rescue Worker Killed by Dog

The woman was working to socialize an Akita to get it ready for adoption when it turned on her. She died from her injuries.

PHOENIX, AZ — A 59-year-old woman working to socialize a rescue dog died from injuries she suffered when the animal attacked her. The woman, whose name has not been released, was volunteering for Akita Advocates.

The group had rented space at Canine Country Club and Feline Inn by 24th and Washington streets, where volunteers worked to get the rescued dogs ready for adoption.

Around 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, a worker noticed an Akita running and covered in blood. The worker found the woman, badly wounded from bites, lying in the exercise area. She was taken to the hospital, where she died.

Akita Advocates said the dog would be euthanized on Thursday. Police said they would follow up to ensure that happens.

No one apparently saw or heard the actual attack.
