📰 News we're reading

1. Unknown odor sickens occupants of Phoenix shelter (ktar.com) — An unexplained odor at the Phoenix Navigation Center in west Phoenix sent three people to the hospital in stable condition and briefly evacuated the 280-bed homeless shelter. Fire crews found air readings within normal limits and later cleared the building, but officials still don't know what caused the smell that made several occupants feel sick.

2. Attorney: 'They're scared,' couple wants normal life back after Phoenix traffic stop (azfamily.com) — A Phoenix couple is still traumatized after an August traffic stop where two now-fired Phoenix police officers allegedly beat, tased, and threatened them at gunpoint near 19th Avenue and Broadway. Their attorney says they're too afraid to work or go outside and believes the officers were trying to steal their car, while the criminal case against the former officers moves forward.

3. 5 hospitalized, 4 seriously hurt in west Phoenix crash (azfamily.com) — Five people were hospitalized after a serious two-car crash Friday night at 59th Avenue and Thomas Road in west Phoenix, including four adults with serious injuries and a teen expected to recover. Phoenix fire crews rushed to the scene around 9 p.m., and investigators have not yet said what caused the collision, so drivers in the area should stay alert and cautious.

4. What Phoenix's extreme heat really does to airplanes and how it can affect your flight (azfamily.com) — If you're flying out of Phoenix Sky Harbor this holiday weekend, local aviation experts say extreme heat can mean longer takeoff rolls, weight limits, and potential delays, especially later in the day. While heat alone rarely grounds flights, it can slow operations and strain outdoor airport workers, so Phoenix travelers are urged to book early departures and build in extra time.

5. ADOT sign contest winners light up AZ highways (ktar.com) — A Phoenix-area neighbor from Ahwatukee is one of two winners whose clever safety slogans are lighting up ADOT's highway message boards this weekend. The contest drew more than 1,700 entries statewide, and officials hope the playful phrases will nudge Valley drivers to buckle up, slow down, and think twice before making risky choices on Arizona roads.
