The Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department celebrated Arbor Day on Friday with a tree planting project in Mountain View Park, located in the city’s Sunnyslope neighborhood. A pair of trees were planted along the walking path in the south side of the park, near several others that were planted earlier this week. The trees will add shade to the path.

Funding for the trees was made possible thanks to a grant and partnership between the city’s FitPHX initiative, ParkRx Arizona and Vitalyst Health Foundation. Through the partnership, healthcare and social service providers “prescribe” spending time at a local park to their patients.

To date in 2020, more than 500 trees have been planted on City of Phoenix park property. As the Parks and Recreation Department continually works to expand the city’s shade tree canopy, it has planted an average of 1,500 trees during each of the last three years.

The city’s 185 flatland parks remain open, but use of some amenities is restricted as the department works with the community to manage the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Being outdoors is important for health and wellness, and the Parks and Recreation Department encourages residents to get outside, get exercise and practice responsible physical distancing while exploring all that the city's park system has to offer. The department is one of more than 1,000 organizations nationwide to have signed on in support of the National Recreation and
Park Association's (NRPA) physical distancing guidelines when using a public park or trail.
