Phoenix Under Excessive Heat Warning; Thunderstorms Possible

Winds could reach more than 60 mph Saturday, creating a significant blowing dust threat, according to the National Weather Service.

PHOENIX, AZ — Temperatures in the Phoenix area could reach 114 degrees as the area remains under an excessive heat warning through 8 p.m. Saturday.

The warning is in effect for portions of south central Arizona, according to the National Weather Service in Phoenix. As of 10:30 a.m., the temperature was 104 degrees in Phoenix and was forecasted to climb between 109 and 114 degrees later in the day.

Arizonians saw little reprieve Friday night — overnight lows only fell to 90 degrees in Phoenix, 91 degrees in Yuma and 85 degrees in El Centro.

Forecasters are also keeping their eyes on the possibility of thunderstorms later on Saturday.

Thunderstorms are expected to form east-southeast of Phoenix on Saturday afternoon or evening, according to the NWS, and have a moderate chance of hitting the Phoenix area and Pinal County.

The storms could bring strong, gusty winds between 40 and 60 mph. Blowing dust is also possible, especially across the East Valley and into Pinal County and southwest Maricopa County.
