Phoenix Water Recognized By National Association Of Clean Water Agencies For Continued Operational Excellence In Wastewater Treatment

The Peak Performance Award is presented to utilities for continuously providing outstanding clean water.

Phoenix Water was honored this week by The National Association of Clean Water Agencies (NACWA) Peak Performance Awards. The NACWA recognized the City of Phoenix Water Services Department for continued environmental and operational excellence.

Phoenix Water's dedicated employees have earned 91st Avenue Wastewater Treatment Plant a Silver Award and 23rd Avenue Wastewater Treatment Plant a Platinum Award. The 23rd Avenue Wastewater Treatment Plant has received the Platinum Award for the last 11 years.

“To be honored amongst an impressive group of utilities contributing to water quality, makes me so proud. It's not an easy job to do but we know how valuable it is," said Nazario Prieto, Assistant Director Phoenix Wastewater Services.

NACWA is a nationally recognized leader in environmental policy, water quality, and ecosystem protection issues. The Peak Performance Award is presented to utilities for continuously providing outstanding clean water. This annual ceremony celebrates honorees who maintain permit compliance ensuring the safest treatment of water. “Being recognized for 11 years in a row is pretty remarkable. This recognition wouldn't be possible without our staff who are committed to environmental responsibility and the community we serve," said Stuart Dalbey, Deputy Director for Phoenix Wastewater Treatment. Phoenix Water received both Platinum and Silver Awards. Platinum Awards recognize 100% compliance with permits over a consecutive five-year period. Silver Award are presented to facilities with less than 5 permit violations for the entire calendar year.

The City of Phoenix Water Services Department is more than 100 years old and treats and distributes tap water to 1.7 million customers daily. Phoenix Water manages the city's sewer system and handles wastewater treatment operations for 2.5 million residents in five Valley cities. Infrastructure includes 7,050 miles of water lines, 4,935 miles of sewer lines, eight treatment plants, 52,000 fire hydrants and 98,216 manholes. Phoenix's water and sewer rates are among the lowest of comparable-sized cities nationwide. Our tap water supply is in very good shape due to decades of planning and multiple water sources. The city reuses nearly all of its wastewater on crops, wetlands, and energy production.
