Scottsdale Civil War Roundtable October Monthly Meeting

On Tuesday, October 20, 2026, the Scottsdale Civil War Roundtable will host Nicole Etcheson author of Bleeding Kansas: Contested Liberty in the Civil War Era. Presenting the thesis that the 1850s territorial conflict stemmed primarily from white settlers' fears over losing self-governance and political liberty rather than the moral or economic aspects of
slavery.
Nicole Etcheson is the Alexander M. Bracken Professor in the Department of History at Ball State University. Her book A Generation at War: The Civil War Era in a Northern Community (2024) won the 2012 Avery O. Craven Award from the Organization of American Historians. She received the 2018 Frederick Jackson Turner Award for Lifetime Contributions to
Midwestern History from the Midwestern History Association.
The lecture will begin at 6:00 p.m. in the Copper Auditorium located on the lower level of the Civic Center branch of the Scottsdale Public Library, 3839 N Drinkwater Blvd., Scottsdale. The doors will open at 5:00 p.m., providing an opportunity to meet the speaker, browse our book sale, and view Civil War videos. Parking is free at the adjacent sub-level
covered parking garage accessible off Northbound Drinkwater Blvd.
