Here are the top stories in Scottsdale today:

  1. The McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park Summer Concert Series is kicking off on April 30! Every Sunday evening through June 25 the park will host free concerts featuring a variety of local artists from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. A different selection of food trucks will also be available each Sunday! Guests should bring chairs or blankets. Be sure to check out the schedule online for the list of artists and food trucks featured each week! (McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park)
  2. The curious case of the costly roundabout: This project on Osborn and Miller Roads is "500% over budget," jumping from an initial budget of $1.6 million to the most recent estimate of $8.2 million. Reasons cited include inflation of construction costs since the original 2015 estimate, an unexpected need to replace a SRP irrigation pipe, and challenges with city water and sewer lines. The roundabout, originally set to wrap up this past January, is now projected for the end of this month. (Scottsdale Progress)
  3. The Scottsdale Old-Timers' Reunion took place yesterday at El Dorado Park. This Palm Sunday tradition began in 1961, when Lester and Labeula Steiner Mowry hosted a gathering for their 25th wedding anniversary. The festivities transformed into an annual gathering for Scottsdale old-timers, those who "lived in Scottsdale in the '40s to early '50s." The daughters of Lester and Labeula kept the tradition alive even after their parents' passing, with the gatherings growing to include Scottsdale newcomers. During the event, attendees "break open the annuals from Scottsdale high schools that date as far back as a century" to "reflect on what Scottsdale used to look like." (Scottsdale Progress)

From my notebook:

  • Kudos to the Scottsdale Police Department! A resident shared the following story: "In November, I had fallen and sustained a broken arm. I moved in with my niece in California through recovery. During that time, the postal carrier said she would keep an eye on the house. One day, she noticed some strange items on my porch and the appearance that things had been moved. She notified the police and Ofc. Neese responded to check over the rest of the house. He called me to say that my house was secure and he removed the items. He also text me to get more information on when I'd be back home so he could keep an eye on it. I feel he needs to be acknowledged for his humanity, compassion and kindness. ~B.B."
