Here are the top stories in Scottsdale today:

  1. Scottsdale's Alliance Defending Freedom is partnering with "leaders of the Arizona Senate and House" to defend a 2021 statute "outlawing abortions in cases of fetal genetic defects," which "includes chromosomal disorders." The Peoria House Speaker and the Gilbert Senate President will have the opportunity to present "that there's nothing unconstitutional about the 2021 statute." Reasons cited include that the law prevents "discrimination based on disability - even in the womb" and "permits abortions in cases where the abnormality is considered 'lethal,' one diagnosed before birth and that will, with reasonable certainty, result in the death of the child within three months after birth." Challengers of the statute believe that the "wording of the law is so complex" that it could leave "physicians unable to know what abortions are and are not legal, leaving them at risk of prison terms for making the wrong decision." U.S. District Court Judge Douglas Rayes will be weighing the arguments presented. (Daily Independent)
  2. The Scottsdale Boys & Girls Club "raised over $1 million at its annual Celebrate Youth Gala." The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale is "a local youth development organization that providers after-school and summer programs for thousands of children and teenagers in the community." During the gala, Jaylin Wilson, a senior at Horizon High School, was named Youth of the Year. This "prestigious award recognizes a young person who has demonstrated outstanding leadership, academic excellence, and a commitment to community service." (Daily Independent)
  3. Tequila Corrido, a company based in Scottsdale, is expanding to Texas, where it "recently launched its Blanco, Reposado, and Anejo tequilas." The company sources their ingredients from Mexico, and the "spirit is barrel-aged in its Guadalajara distillery." The tequila is currently "available in 38 states across the country." (citysuntimes)
  4. Dam releases following "recent heavy snowmelt" caused flooding in "riverbeds and bottomlands" along the Salt River "from Granite Reef to Tempe Town Lake between Scottsdale and Mesa." With temperatures reaching the 80's this week and snowmelt being "expected to accelerate," the National Weather Service is "also monitoring the river downstream from Tempe Town Lake through the West Valley." From my notebook:

  • Taking the time to say thank you can certainly mean a lot! The Scottsdale Police Department received recognition for an incident that occurred in February when "an unknown person fired numerous handgun rounds into the air at 66th St and Clinton St." The individual commended the members for their "response time, resources, and professionalism" surrounding the incident. (Scottsdale Police Department via Facebook)
  • Take me out to the ballgame... ouch! The Scottsdale Fire Department assisted a "little Dodgers fan" who "got cactus in his finger" during a San Francisco Giants spring training game at the Scottsdale Stadium. (Scottsdale Fire Department via Facebook)
  • Save the dates! Scottsdale Family ArtsFest is scheduled for March 24 and 25. The free event at SkySong will include "performances, interactive demonstrations, creative interventions, and culinary delights from local food trucks." Attendees will "experience performances and art exhibitions delivered by Scottsdale Unified School District students, family friendly arts activities presented by Scottsdale Arts Learning & Innovation, and interactive demonstrations from City of Scottsdale departments."
