The closure is one piece of a larger $13 million flood mitigation effort involving Scottsdale, Tempe and the Flood Control District of Maricopa County, with Tempe serving as the lead agency.
The project will extend an existing 78-inch storm drain that channels water to the Indian Bend Wash, capturing stormwater from streets north of Roosevelt Street and Continental Drive to improve drainage south of the area.

The work involves trenching and installing 7,500 linear feet of storm drain and 1,200 linear feet of lateral connection pipes, along with additional lateral drains, catch basins and manholes along 74th, 70th and 68th streets.
Funding for the project comes through an intergovernmental agreement, with the Flood Control District covering $8.45 million, or 65%, and Scottsdale and Tempe each contributing $2.275 million, or 17.5%.
No detour route was included in the project announcement. The full Roosevelt Street Storm Drain project is expected to wrap up in December 2026.
