As Earth Day arrives today Phoenix homeowners are being encouraged to conserve water and energy but according to Semper Fi Heating & Cooling, the most effective solutions aren’t always the ones being promoted.

According to the Arizona Department of Water Resources, the average Arizona household uses approximately 120 gallons of water per person, per day, with the majority of that going toward outdoor irrigation. At the same time, much of the state continues to operate under long-term drought conditions tied to reduced allocations from the Colorado River.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, household leaks can waste nearly 10,000 gallons of water per year, and 10% of homes have leaks that waste 90 gallons or more per day.

“In Phoenix, where every gallon counts, that kind of loss adds up quickly. Not just environmentally, but financially. A simple inspection can often deliver more savings than replacing fixtures,” added Coppinger.

Smart Irrigation Can Cut Outdoor Water Use by 20–50%

Outdoor watering is one of the largest contributors to residential water use in Arizona. The Arizona Municipal Water Users Association reports that 30% to 70% of household water use goes toward landscaping, depending on the season. Smart irrigation systems equipped with weather-based controllers can reduce outdoor water use by 20% to 50%, according to the EPA.

“Traditional irrigation systems tend to overwater, especially during cooler months,” said Coppinger. “Smart systems adjust automatically, which is critical in a desert climate.”

Arizona’s extreme heat doesn’t just impact comfort; it also drives up energy and water usage. Routine maintenance, such as checking plumbing systems, inspecting water heaters, and ensuring HVAC systems are running efficiently, can significantly reduce both water and energy waste.

“With utility costs rising across Arizona, it’s important to remember that well-maintained systems use less water, less energy, and last longer,” added Coppinger. “There’s a difference between being efficient and being effective – the ultimate goal is to eliminate waste without lowering quality of life.”
